MARYLAND ADJUSTER LICENSING INFORMATION

License Types

Public Adjuster

"Public adjuster" means a person that:
(i) solicits business or represents itself to the public as an adjuster of first party insurance claims for losses or damages arising under insurance contracts that insure the real or personal property, or both, of an insured;:
(ii) receives compensation for investigating, appraising, evaluating, or otherwise giving advice or help to an insured in the adjustment of claims for losses or damages arising under insurance contracts that insure the real or personal property, or both, of an insured; or:
(iii) for compensation, directly or indirectly, solicits business, investigates or adjusts losses, or advises an insured about insurance claims for losses or damages arising under insurance contracts that insure the real or personal property, or both, of an insured for another person engaged in the business of adjusting losses or damages arising under insurance contracts that insure the real or personal property, or both, of an insured.:
"Public adjuster" does not include a person that investigates, adjusts, or appraises claims for loss or damage covered by a motor vehicle insurance policy.:
Maryland only licenses public adjusters to adjust claims for losses or damages arising under insurance contracts that insure the real or personal property, or both, of the insured.:

Licensing Requirements

Requirements

Individual applicants:
(1) An individual applicant must be trustworthy and competent to transact business as a public adjuster so as to safeguard the interests of the public.:
(2) An individual applicant must have been employed regularly by the Administration as an employee or by an insurer, adjuster, insurance producer or public adjuster for a period totaling at least 1 year::
(i) during the 5 years immediately preceding the date of application; or:
(ii) for a member of the U.S. armed forces, during the 5 years immediately::
1. preceding the date of entrance into the armed forces; or:
2. after discharge.:
(3) Except as otherwise provided in this subsection, an individual applicant shall::
(i) pass a written examination given by the Commissioner under this subtitle in order to determine the competency of the applicant to act as a public adjuster;:
(ii) pay the application fee required by § 2-112 of this article; and:
(iii) after receiving notification that the applicant has passed the examination or is otherwise eligible to be licensed, pay the applicable license fee required by § 2-112 of this article.:
(4) The examination requirement of paragraph (3) of this subsection does not apply to an individual who was licensed as a public adjuster in the State on June 30, 1985.:
(5) An individual applicant who fails an examination may not take another examination until at least 14 days after the date of the last examination that the applicant failed.:

Business entity applicants. A business entity applicant must::
(1) be trustworthy and competent to transact business as a public adjuster so as to safeguard the interests of the public;:
(2) employ one or more individual licensed public adjusters; and:
(3) pay the applicable license fee required by § 2-112 of this article.:

Reciprocity

Nonresident licenses will be issued on a reciprocal basis if the nonresident is licensed as a public adjuster in their state of residence. :

Nonresident licenses will be issued on a reciprocal basis if the nonresident is licensed as a public adjuster in their state of residence. :

Nonresidents, whose state of residence does not issue a public adjuster license or the equivalent, may be issued a license if the applicant meets the licensing requirements of a resident applicant. :

Maintaining Your License

Renewal

Public Adjuster Licenses expire June 30th of every other year, and may be renewed 30 days prior to the license expiration date. The fee to renew a Public Adjuster license is $65. This includes the $50 renewal fee and the $15 fraud prevention fee. :

Reinstatement

For up to one (1) year after the expiration date, licensees may reinstate an expired license by submitting the required application, $50 renewal fee, $15 fraud prevention fee, and $100 reinstatement fee. :

Fees       

License Fee$25 or $50, required by § 2-112 of the Insurance Article
Renewal Fee$65 (This includes the $50 renewal fee and the $15 fraud prevention fee.)
