License Types
Adjuster
An "adjuster" is any individual who, for compensation, fee or commission, investigates and settles claims arising under property, casualty or surety insurance contracts, on behalf solely of either the insurer or insured. A licensed attorney who is qualified to practice law in this state is deemed not to be an adjuster for the purposes of this article.Adjusters are licensed in West Virginia
Public Adjuster
"Public adjuster" means an independent contractor representing solely the financial interests of the insured named in the policy.No specific rules are found for the licensing of public adjusters.
Crop Adjuster
"Crop adjuster" means a person who adjusts crop insurance claims under the federal crop insurance program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture.Company Adjuster
Company adjuster" means an adjuster representing the interests of the insurer, including an independent contractor and a salaried employee of the insurer.Emergency Adjuster
Whenever the commissioner determines that a state insurance emergency exists in the state of West Virginia, the commissioner may authorize individuals to be emergency adjusters. The commissioner may authorize such number of additional adjusters as he considers necessary to adequately address the emergency condition existing in the state. Any such emergency license is valid only for so long as the commissioner specifies, not to exceed a period of one hundred twenty days.Exclusions

Requirements
To become a licensed West Virginia insurance adjuster, individuals must:Be 18 years of age or more.
Be a resident of West Virginia, or a licensed resident of a state that grants similar reciprocal licensing to West Virginia adjusters.
Be trustworthy and competent.
All West Virginia residents, as well as non-residents who live in states that are not reciprocal with West Virginia, must take the West Virginia license exam.
In the event of a catastrophe, West Virginia will issue 90-day Emergency Adjuster licenses.
Reciprocity and Non Residents
West Virginia grants non-resident licenses to applicants who hold a resident adjuster license in their home state, as long as that state is reciprocal with West Virginia (i.e. as long as that state grants non-resident licenses to West Virginia adjusters in return).Residents of states that do not license adjusters may designate, as their home state, a state in which they have taken an adjuster exam and hold a license

West Virginia requires applicants to complete a licensing exam administered by Pearson VUE, unless the applicant is currently licensed in his or her state of residence and that state allows West Virginia adjusters to be licensed as non-resident adjusters.Bond Requirement

How to Apply
For Residents:Complete West Virginia Adjuster Application and send it in along with a $25 application fee.
Take and pass the West Virginia exam and submit your original Pearson VUE Score Report.
If you have held any insurance license in any other state, you must present a Letter of Clearance from that state.
If applying for a Crop Adjuster License, certification by the Federal Risk Management Agency is required.
Non-Residents:
West Virginia Adjuster Application must be completed and sent in, along with the proper fee ($25 unless your home state charges a higher fee.)
Original Pearson VUE Score Report. Non-resident applicants who are not licensed in their home state must take and pass the West Virginia exam.
If designating a home state, home state must be identified at the top of Page 1 of the application.
If applying for a Crop Adjuster License, certfication by the Federal Risk Management Agency is required. Nonresident crop adjusters may be licensed as a nonresident crop adjuster in this state if the applicant’s home state has established, by law or regulation like requirements for the licensing of a resident of this state as a nonresident crop adjuster. Should a nonresident crop adjuster’s home state not license crop adjusters, an individual may designated a home state in any state which he or she has a license. This applies only to individuals whose principal place of residence does not license adjusters.

Maintaining Your License
Renewal
The license must be renewed each year on May 31st, regardless of when it was attained. CLM Tracker subscribed users can renew the licenses via CLM.Continuing Education
There are no Continuing Education requirements for the West Virginia license.License Termination or Lapse
